The X4 has always had a particular point to prove. It takes the X3's practical bones and wraps them in a coupe roofline that BMW was told, emphatically, would never sell. Eight years later, this Alpine White 2017 xDrive20i M Sport still looks like it arrived from slightly further in the future than the rest of the carpark.
Behind the wheel, the M Sport package keeps things honest. The steering has that characteristic BMW weight and feedback, the eight-speed Steptronic shifts with a composure that makes you forget you're in a turbocharged four-pot, and the seats hold you in place without making you feel trapped. The beige leather cabin is warm and properly finished -- a nice counter to the aggressive silhouette outside.
xDrive does exactly what the name implies: puts power where it's needed, quietly and without drama. On wet roads around Nunawading or a weekend run up to the ranges, the system earns its keep without demanding you think about it.
At 75,000 kilometres, this X4 still has plenty of its best years ahead. The iDrive navigation, memory seats, panoramic sunroof, and reverse camera are all present and functional -- the kind of kit you'd miss immediately if it were gone.
White outside. Beige leather inside. M Sport body work everywhere else. It is a combination that photographs well and ages even better.
BMW decided to build a coupe SUV before most people thought that was a real category. Credit where it is due -- they were right, and this one proves it without trying too hard.
