Finished in Denim Blue, it reads differently depending on the light – deep and almost navy under a Melbourne winter sky, brighter and more alive when the sun finds it. The proportions do the talking: a long bonnet, a clean shoulder line, and those signature lights that make the car recognisable from a block away without ever raising its voice.
Inside is where Volvo has always played its strongest hand. Black leather, a portrait touchscreen that puts everything within a thumb’s reach, and a panoramic roof that turns the cabin from merely comfortable into genuinely calm. Materials feel chosen rather than specified. It is the sort of interior that makes a delayed commute feel a little less like punishment.
The B5 powertrain pairs a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, and the effect is subtle rather than showy – smoother pull away from lights, less fuss in traffic, and a drivetrain that feels like it is working with you instead of against you. All-wheel drive puts it down cleanly on a wet Eastern Freeway morning, and the eight-speed automatic simply gets on with the job.
Then there is the part Volvo never needs to argue about. Safety is not a marketing line here, it is the founding idea, and the S60 carries that inheritance in a way few rivals can claim honestly.
