The 2.0-litre four and the four-speed automatic make no promises they cannot keep. Power arrives politely, the gearbox goes about its work without fuss, and once you are up to speed the whole car settles into an easy rhythm. It is the sort of drive that leaves you thinking about your day rather than the machinery underneath you.
The cabin is honest grey cloth and clear dials, everything within reach and nothing shouting for attention. There is proper room in the back for adults, and a boot that takes a week of shopping without a word of complaint. Sedans of this era understood that comfort was mostly a matter of not being annoying, and the 626 got the memo.
Mazda spent the early 2000s quietly over-engineering the ordinary, and you feel it in the way the doors shut and the way this thing holds a straight line on the freeway. It is unremarkable in the very best sense of the word.
The odometer is not shy, and neither are we. The 238,000 kilometres are exactly why this one is priced where it is — and read the other way, they are a track record. The engine and transmission have already done the hard years and simply kept turning up.
