Some cars shrink a city. The 2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i is one of them, tall enough to see past the queue on a wet Monday and compact enough to take the parking space three other drivers just gave up on.
It drives the way a BMW is supposed to. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol is hushed and unhurried in traffic, then finds a genuine second wind once the road opens up, and the seven-speed dual-clutch changes gear so cleanly you stop noticing it is doing anything at all.
The cabin is where the badge earns its keep. Everything is angled a few degrees toward the driver, the sports wheel sits exactly where your hands expect it, and the head-up display keeps your eyes on the road rather than the dash.
None of that came at the cost of being useful. The power tailgate opens onto a boot that takes a weekend away without negotiation, the rear seats split and fold the moment the plan changes, and the raised ride height turns loading it from a chore into an afterthought.
At 54,000 kilometres this one has barely started. The white paint presents well and the whole car carries itself like something that has been owned properly rather than merely used.
For anyone in Melbourne weighing up a premium small SUV, this is the sensible answer that still feels like an indulgence. Big enough for the family, the dog and the tip run, small enough for a Nunawading side street.
